Three volcanoes, Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro are the three main attractions of Tongariro National Park. They are home to some of New Zealand’s most spectacular landscapes. There are a range of fantastic mountaineering and climbing opportunities in the park in all seasons.

The park is home to a variety of alpine plants, some of which are at high altitudes. Tongariro National Park is the first national park to be ‘gifted by an indigenous country’. This was done to preserve the Tuwharetoa mana and prevent the land from being divided.

Although beautiful, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, can be dangerous if you are not fully prepared to enter an alpine environment. Extreme weather, terrain and distance have resulted in this track having the highest number of search and rescues for hikers in New Zealand. Many who have completed the 19.4km journey will tell their stories of how the climbs are steep and unpredictable, but it is well worth it in every way. To drop you off, transport must be arranged at the beginning of the track and to provide pick up from the end of the track after your trek. There are many operators in Tongariro National Park, Taupo that provide transport to and fro the track. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is heralded as the best one-day trek in New Zealand, whileit ranks among the top ten single-day treks in the world.

Alternative longer routes can take up to three days and include staying in DoC huts . Getting to the park is easy, with good quality roads surrounded by stunning scenery to enjoy along the way. Whakapapa Village is located right in the action, only 8 minutes from the ski area. It is also conveniently located from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, which is just 35 minutes away.

You can find beautiful walks, bike rides, and hikes wherever you are based in or around Tongariro National Park. These are great for day trips or longer adventures. Tongariro National Park is best known for its Tongariro Alpine Crossing, and the large ski fields Whakapapa & Turoa at Mount Ruapehu. You can find a variety of other activities around the park throughout the year. It was renamed New in 1894.
